Sounding

Sounding for Confluence is an access-and-permission inventory tool. It answers a question most admins can't otherwise check quickly: who can actually see this space, and why?

How it works

Sounding scans a site's spaces and resolves every space- and page-level permission grant down to the actual user, group, or Confluence access-class holding it. Grants that look like public or anonymous access are flagged for manual review, right alongside the rest of the inventory, so there's no separate report to cross-reference.

The dashboard requires a Confluence-admin capability check before it will run.

A known limitation

View-restricted pages are invisible to the scan and are excluded from the inventory entirely. This matters more here than it would for a simpler tool: Sounding exists to answer "who can see this space, and why," and a page that is already view-restricted is, by definition, exactly the kind of content an access review most needs to cover. If a page in a scanned space is view-restricted, Sounding cannot include it in the inventory, and the inventory should be read with that gap in mind rather than as a complete accounting of every page's access.

Data handling

Sounding stores accountIds, display names, and restriction payloads. This is real, ongoing retention, not a "nothing is stored" claim. Storage is exclusively in Forge KVS (Atlassian Forge's built-in key-value storage), within your own Atlassian instance; it never leaves your site.

Separately, Sounding makes zero external egress calls: no data leaves Atlassian's own infrastructure. That is a claim about network connections, not about whether anything is retained; the retention described above is real and happens inside your own instance.

Status

Sounding has been submitted to the Atlassian Marketplace and is under review (submitted 2026-08-28). It is not yet available to install.
